Once feedback fades, something else often takes its place.
Measurement.
Numbers.
Milestones.
Signals that confirm you’re moving in the right direction.
There’s nothing wrong with measurement.
It becomes a problem only when it’s asked to do work it can’t do yet.
Early in something that fits, progress is usually qualitative before it’s quantitative.
Understanding deepens.
Decisions take less effort.
The work stops feeling provisional.
Those changes don’t show up on dashboards.
And when thoughtful people go looking for metrics too soon, they often misinterpret silence as failure.
It isn’t.
Most durable progress happens beneath the surface first.
Clarity stabilizes before results appear.
Consistency forms before outcomes become visible.
If you try to measure before that foundation exists, the numbers will tell you very little—and often the wrong thing.
Here’s a distinction worth keeping in mind:
Measurement is useful once direction is set.
Before that, it can distort judgment.
If you’re tempted to quantify something that still feels formative, that’s not impatience—it’s uncertainty looking for reassurance.
But reassurance rarely comes from numbers at this stage.
It comes from noticing whether the work is becoming easier to return to—and harder to abandon.
That’s not progress you can chart.
But it’s progress you can trust.
