You've heard the question a hundred times, maybe asked it yourself: why doesn't AI actually save me any time? You open ChatGPT, you type something, you get something back, and then you spend twenty minutes fixing it. That's not saving time. That's renting a slower version of yourself.

Here's the idea this whole issue is built around.

You're handing AI the wrong job. You're asking it to think, when the only thing it should ever do is type.

Let me name what's probably freezing you. You think the problem is that you haven't found the right tool yet. It isn't. The problem is what you're asking the tool to do.

Now let me paint the picture. Except I don't have to invent one this time, because CNBC reported a real one.

A project director, forty years old, capable, spent an entire summer unsure whether she was working with a human or a bot. Her AI tools were quietly filtering her email. Deciding, on their own, what mattered and what didn't. They filtered out important messages. Delays followed. Promises to her client got broken.

Notice what happened there. The automation didn't save her time. It stole it back, with interest, in the form of hidden rework and cleanup.

Here's the truth. She didn't hand AI the drudgery. She handed it her judgment. She let it decide what was important, which is the one thing it has no business deciding.

That's the whole trap. AI is a terrible thinker and a tireless typist. The moment you ask it to judge, sort, or decide what matters, you've given away the part that was always yours - and you'll pay for it in rework.

So the fix isn't a better tool. It's a clearer job. Pick one task you do again and again. Write your decision rules down, once, in plain words: keep this, skip that, flag anything like this. Then let AI only execute inside those lines.

The judgment stays with you. The typing goes to the intern.

That's it. Not ten clever tricks. One repeated job, your rules written down once, and a machine that runs between the lines you drew.

Here's a nugget you can use today. Before you automate any task, write your decision rules as three plain "if this, then that" lines. For email, that might be: if it's from a client, flag it and never file it; if it's a newsletter, archive it; if I'm unsure, leave it in the inbox. Notice that every rule ends with a human backstop for the uncertain cases. That backstop is the difference between an intern that helps and a bot that quietly breaks your promises. Write the rules once, and the drudgery runs itself without touching your judgment.
